Bill Gates to hold talks with Bihar CM

During his India visit Gates will take stock of the work done by his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation

NEW DELHI, INDIA: Microsoft founder Bill Gates is scheduled to visit Delhi this Friday to take summary of the work done by his 'Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in India, will also have a video conferencing with Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, and on the same day at 4 pm.

Though the topic of discussion has not been confirmed by the Chief Minister's office, sources at Microsoft have informed CIOL that if Gates is impressed by the developmental work in the state, he is likely to discuss the way in which he could contribute to the development of Bihar. According to a recent report, Bihar has shown revolutionary improvement in its education system.

State government has opened more than 18000 primary schools after Nitish Kumar came in to power in November 2005. These new schools have increased primary education access by 98 per cent in the state. According to official sources, Gates had earlier expressed his desire to meet Nitish Kumar in New Delhi on July 23. However, since the monsoon session of the state Assembly is going on, it was decided that they would have a video conferencing instead.

During his India visit, Gates will take summary of work done by his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in India. During his visit in November 2002, Gates had announced $100-million initiative to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS in India. This amount was later raised to $258 million by Gates. In 2003, the Foundation launched Avahan – a 10-year initiative to support India’s efforts to reduce the spread of HIV. To date, the foundation has committed more than $330 million to Avahan.
