Canon to double its workforce for govt projects

GURGAON, INDIA: Seeing the growth coming from the government sector, Canon India will double the number of workforce this year in its division responsible for government projects.

“We will double our workforce in our sub-division handling government related projects and we will double this workforce for each government division. Suppose if three people were looking after a ministry, we will make it six,” said Alok Bharadwaj, senior vice-president Canon India on the sidelines of unveiling its new multi-city channel engagement program - ROCKS (Reach out to channel for knowledge and sharing program).

The four main segments that contribute to Canon India's IT peripheral and business imaging solution comes from large enterprise, government, small and medium enterprise and commercial establishments.

Canon India expects that in this financial year most of its business for IT peripherals and Business imaging solution will come from government projects. Most of the sale of its product in this division is happening through system integrators.

“System integrators account for almost 25 per cent of the total business of scanners and printers that we do with government. We are involved in Sarva Sikhsha Abhiyaan of the government, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Goa and Punjab. TCS has also taken solution from us for e-passport project,” elaborated Bharadwaj.

Canon is expecting additional growth from government projects in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Gujarat and Delhi.

Through its latest ROCKS program, which aims to enhance engagement of channel partner of the company, Canon India will also work to improve last mile connectivity with the government.

“We have observed that last mile delivery mechanism to the government had been very poor in the country. It is an opportunity for us to build on this weakness that exist in the market,” said Bharadwaj.

“Through ROCKS program we will provide best last mile connectivity to the government. We have Gurukul Academy under ROCKS where we train sales persons of our channel partner. They come out as good as direct sales persons of the company,” he added.

In 2010, Canon India has target to groom 300 sales professional in Gurukul Academy under its ROCKS program.
