CCEA approves the computerization and networking of post offices involving an expenditure of Rs 628.66 crore

NEW DELHI, INDIA: In an effort to modernize the country's postal services, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) recently approved the computerization and networking of post offices involving an expenditure of 628.66 crore rupees.

The first phase programme would cover computerization and networking of 6915 post offices, 2222 administrative offices and 23 accounts offices, said a press release.

The project includes all the 5143 double-handed sub post offices, as all bigger post offices are already computerized. A double handed post office comprises a postmaster and a postal assistant.

The CCEA also approved upgradation of the hardware of all the 1772 post offices which were computerized in the ninth plan and computerization and networking of all divisional offices and Sub divisional offices and Postal Accounts Offices, the release added.

Modernization of PTC, Mysore and setting up of a Project Management Unit are part of the approved proposal.

The project would be completed by 2009-10 and would be implemented by the field units and monitored by the PMU set up in Department of Posts.

Through the implementation of the project, the double handed offices would be able to improve their quality of services, increase their productivity and manage the additional work load on account of NREGS payment work.

The computerization of more post offices would create an enabling environment for enhancing track and trace and other web based services which would reduce the paper work, particularly in administrative and accounts offices, the release said.

In the second phase, computerization and networking of all single handed sub post offices, all GDS post offices, development of integrated modular software, establishment of Data Centre(s) and Disaster Recovery Centre and total networking of all post offices /postal accounts offices/administrative offices will be taken up. The Department of Posts has an approved an outlay of Rs.2700 crores for the broad scheme of Information Technology (IT) induction in postal operations.

Out of this, Rs.2106 crore has been earmarked for the sub scheme computerization and modernization of post offices.

In the Eleventh Plan, it is proposed to computerize all the departmental post offices and grameen dal sevak post offices, develop an integrated software with the guidance of consultant(s) and a technology partner(s), establish National Data Centre(s) and Disaster Recovery Centre and network all computerized offices.
