Innovate to succeed say women leaders

Women leaders from different fields share their thoughts on what it takes for a women to be a successful innovator and a leader at the Cisco Connected Women Leadership Forum 2009

BANGALORE: Cisco, a provider in networking products and solutions, held its second Annual Connected Women Leadership Forum 2009 here on Wednesday, as part of the three-day 'Cisco Innovation World' held from May 25 to May 27. The event was hosted by the Cisco Women Action Network Program, India Chapter.

The theme of this event was to recognize and celebrate the spirit of innovative and successful women entrepreneur in India.

Women leaders from different fields such as IT, retail, venture-funding etc participated in the event and shared their thoughts on what it takes for a woman to be a successful innovator and a leader.

Some of the key demonstrations showcased at the event included 'Branch of the Future'- a solution that enables head-office like efficient and cost effective operations at a bank's branch office; Common Service Center – a rural banking and TeleHealth Solution; Cisco Virtual Office Home Networking solutions for remote working; data center and virtualization solutions; solutions for Smart+Connected Communities and other solutions for collaboration, mobility and unified communication.

Talking about the importance of innovation, Rama NS, Development Center Head, Infosys said, "In my opinion innovation should be a part of any activity, let it be product, services, R&D or any other field."

She further added that every time there is an opportunity to innovate, women especially have to find smarter ways of thinking and working not only at office but also at home. "Earlier India did not succeed in product development because the market was here. But today the market is India and there are less challenges and lot of opportunity for innovations," she pointed out.

Usha Mohan, MD, Triumph India Software Services, while citing an example on how to look at opportunity with innovation said, "When I started my career - technical writing - it was a very niche area and no one had heard of it. But the idea came to me when I was in marketing software and technology to people. I thought why not make a business out it where we can help people to use those software and technology."

She further said that innovation means defining the line of business, recruitments, and setting up models with out-of-the-box thinking as well having a business strategy which would make the employees happy and keep the business going on.

Taking a different note, Vani Kola, MD, IndoUS Capital Advisors, said that for her innovation means finding new ways for solving current and immediate challenges.

Talking about the challenges in terms of gender gap and cultural problems that a woman entrepreneur faces today, Usha said that the Indian cultural roots have become a mental block for women to think out of the box.

Thinking on the same lines Rama said that women need to shed their hesitations and speak up. Risk taking, problem solving thinking should be developed which could help in being successful.
