Recession hits domain registrations

BANGALORE, INDIA: Did you know this is happening? The number of domain registered on the world wide web is experiencing a free fall. According to report by domain registrar VeriSign’s on the state of the industry, there has been a 17 per cent drop in domain registrations. More than 10.1 million new Web addresses were registered in the fourth quarter, which is a fall compared to the year ago period.

In fact, there has been a yearlong decline in new domain registrations, said the data available with VeriSign, domain-data provider ZookNIC and the nonprofit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN). For the record, while the new domain registrations averaged 11.9 million in 2008, the number stood at 12.2 million in 2007.

But why? You tend to ask. The answer may well be economic slowdown. According to 'The Wall Street Journal', the slowdown in new URLs is a reflection of the recession’s impact. Verisgn has said any type of broader economic weakness is going to affect new registrations. It has been pointed out this is something the industry saw in the early part of the decade.

In case you wanted to know which is the fastest-growing international domain this quarter, the answer is Russia’s. The nation's '.ru' extension climbed by 11 per cent, compared with the third quarter, while Chinese registrations grew 8 per cent. Talking of the Chinese, the country is still the largest in numbers among non-US domain names, after addresses ending in '.cn' shot past Germany’s .de last year.
