Twitter 'exiles' fake Dalai Lama

The account that was created on Saturday attracted nearly 20,000 followers in just two days

BANGALORE, INDIA:Microblogging service Twitter announced on Monday that it has suspended an account that claimed to be run by the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the Tibetans in exile.

The account that was created on Saturday had attracted nearly 20,000 followers in just two days, according to media reports.

“The account was suspended because it violated our terms of use regarding impersonation," AFP quoted Twitter co-founder Biz Stone as saying.

The background of the fake twitter page carried a photo of Dalai Lama, which was taken from the official website of the spiritual leader.

The 'tweet' read as "Welcome to the official Twitter page of His Holiness the Dalai Lama - administered by The Office of His Holiness the Dalai Lama."

Twitter claims that it has more than six million users of it service.

Launched in August 2006, the micrblogging site was in the news last month when the Twitter accounts of US president-elect Barack Obama, singer Britney Spears and other prominent figures were hacked and fake messages sent out in their names.
