Wipro to hire locals abroad to counter protectionism

BANGALORE, INDIA: In order to protect itself from falling prey to the US protectionist policy, Bangalore-based technology outsourcing major Wipro Technologies has decided to step up local hiring in overseas markets.

During its quarterly financial results announcements, Wipro's Chairman Azim Premji said the company is looking to increase the count of local employees on-site. He said, “At present about 30 per cent of the employees are locals, but we would like to see this number increasing.”

Referring to the recent statement made by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, he said that though the US has conveyed its willingness to discontinue protectionist policy, given the constant pressure on the US administration, Wipro would prefer staying alert on this matter.

According to the company, this new strategy of hiring locals would not affect the overall cost to the company (CTC) because, in the other case, the company would have to send employees from India to foreign offices, causing an increase in the overall cost.

Elaborating on this, Pratik Kumar, corporate vice president, Human Resources, Wipro said, “It is about 3-4 centers, where we have around 1000 employees, so CTC will more or less come around the same.” He added that the company would also look at the bench basis for a balancing act. However, the work model of locals to offshore would remain the same, which is 20:80, he added.
