Samsung makes new phone partly of corn

BANGALORE, INDIA: On August 16 this year, when an 'eco-conscious' phone with a casing of biodegradable plastic made partly from corn worth $49.99 goes on sale, Samsung will become the third phone manufacturer, after Motorola and Sony Ericsson, to offer a device made from biodegradable materials, say media reports.

Named Reclaim, the slider-style phone with a QWERTY keyboard and a 2 megapixel camera, will be available on Sprint Nextel’s wireless network starting August 16. The phone sports a slide-out alphabetic keyboard, e-mail and Web access, a camera and GPS navigation.

The plastic of the phone's casing is 40 per cent corn-based. Asserting its 'green goal', the phone's charger lights up when the phone is fully charged, to remind the owner to unplug it to save electricity.

Though several manufacturers have made 'green' phones, reports say that most of them have generally been bare-bones devices, like Motorola Inc's Renew, carried by T-Mobile USA. Nokia Corp.'s Evolve is also a simple, low-end phone and lacks the backing of a US carrier.

Samsung claimed that the packaging for the phone and the phone tray inside the box were made from 70 percent recycled materials. And also, images and text on the box as well as the phone warranty information were printed with soy-based ink. And there would be no thick paper user manual offered with the phone, it added.
